Mrs. Burke' s Car Ride Devotions
Dear Sonlight Families,
Thank you for joining us in this car ride devotion journey.
It would be interesting for us to determine if these were helpful for your family.
We enjoyed being a part of this great series and hope that the messages have enriched your family's lives.
Pastor Pete wrapped up the 10 Commandments with a sermon on the final commandment to not crave what other people have. We've all heard the saying that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. He told us the best cure ting is thankfulness. That's interesting, isn't it? The Bible tells us the godliness with contentment is great gain. (1 Timothy 6:6) So, let's take a look at some topics we can discuss while driving around Lynden and abroad this week.
1.) Have each passenger say the top 10 things for which they are thankful. This shouldn't just occur at Thanksgiving time around the table.
2.) Have each passenger think about one or two things they can give away perhaps to either the Hope Office or to one of the thrift shops. We spend less time thinking of ourselves when we think of others. Plus, giving leads to joy.
3.) Joy lasts longer than happiness. Discuss what this means. How do we find joy?
4.) I have found that the more time we spend out of creation, the more we want stuff. Spending time outside is good for kids. What are some activities you can do as a family outside? Now that the weather is turning, we should all seize the outdoors. Creation keeps us connected to God and creativity. I'm not an expert and haven't done any formal research, but I've noticed that children are more creativity when they play outside.
5.) Another great way to avoid falling into the coveting trap is to be thankful for others. When you hear about them going on your dream vacation or getting the toy you've always wanted, how can we learn to be happy for them? What words can we tell them that truly come from our hearts? It's hard to do, but it helps our hearts to be happy for others.
6.) Talk to God. Tell him what you really want and how sometimes you think it's unfair that other people are getting what you want. He can help you. Tell him your deep desires. Ask him to take care of your needs. God is faithful to provide all that we need and won't give us a scorpion when we ask for a new bike. He knows best and wants to take care of us.
Thanks again for taking this ride with us.
We love you all so much.
