Small GroupsWHY JOIN A SMALL GROUP? Your Understanding of the Bible Can Be Greatly Enhanced In a Small Group. If you've ever listened to a Bible teacher or preacher and wanted to stop that person and say, "But what about...?" or I don't understand!', then a small group is for you! Preaching and teaching is one form of communicating information, but it's not always effective in helping people develop a personal application for their lives. This is where a small group comes in. In a small group setting, you can ask questions, participate in a discussion, and hear others share insights and illustrations of the truth you have been taught.
Small Groups Can Help You Begin To Really Feel Like Part Of God's Family. Most people who have been a part of a group say the greatest benefit is the close relationships and friendships that develop. You will have someone to telephone during the week to share an urgent prayer request or an exciting answer to prayer. You'll discover that your needs and problems are not unique - we're all in the same boat. It is very encouraging to know that others are facing the same difficulties and have lived through them and grown through the process.
Small Groups Are A Great Place To Learn To Pray! Many people are hesitant to pray in front of others, especially in a large church. But in a small group you will learn to participate in prayer by having a discussion together with God. No one is pressured to pray, but as you become more comfortable, you'll be able to pray sentence prayers and join in. There are many promises in the Bible related to group prayer. While praying together, we are drawn together and we find answers to the needs in our lives.
Your Group Can Help Provide The Support That You Need For Life's Problems. Small Groups provide excellent support in times of crisis, change and stress. You'll have a sense of stability and security knowing there are people who really care for you and who are committed to standing with you.
When someone loses a job, a family member has an extended illness, or your family is going through some unforeseen turmoil, your small group can address the practical needs arising from these challenging circumstances. Many people in our church can testify that they could not have made it through a difficult time if it hadn't been for the support of their group.
"...we really have a lot of great discussions-sometimes about general Biblical questions, prayer time and just helping each other to "Live above Worry and Stress" as we go through the lessons--with tears and laughter!!! We all come tired and leave uplifted"
How Do I Find A Small Group? FriendshipsPerhaps the most natural of all ways to get connected into a small group. As you make friendships within the church they often naturally lead into a small group.
Ministry OpportunitiesBy serving somewhere in the church you will naturally connect with people having similar interests.
Join an Existing Small GroupPlease come to Sonlight's Welcome Center in the foyer. We would like to be sure you are connected to others here at Sonlight. Connie Beamer is our Networker who coordinates Small Groups. Connie's contact information: cbeamer@sonlightchurch.com, 354-3434, ext. 23
Start Your Own GroupYes, you can do it! Even beginning with only 2 other people as your Small Group is a healthy start and gives room for the potential to grow and include others. This is probably the most needed type of Small Group ministry at this time - giving opportunity for growth and watching for how God will work as you step out in faith.
Small Group Frequently Asked Questions:
How Important are Small Groups? We consider Small Groups the hub of our ministry. They are the place where we can encourage, support, and challenge one another. God doesn't want any of us to walk alone - we need each other. A Small Group is the constant factor through the ups and downs of life. We want to be a church community, not a crowd!
Which Group Should I Join?We suggest you join a group based on something in common, especially your "season in life". Groups work best when you share common interests, backgrounds, marital status or similar-aged children. Frankly, you might try two or three groups before you find the perfect fit but don't worry, you'll find it!
What About Childcare? Some Small Groups offer childcare as part of their group, or kids may play together as you meet, depending upon their ages and needs. Other parents arrange for childcare at home. Sometimes it works best for families to share a sitter or to swap childcare with another family whose group meets on a different evening or time.
What Will We Study?Sonlight is currently reading through the One Year Bible as a congregation - most groups are focusing their discussion on questions based on these daily readings. These One Year Bible Questions are available at the Welcome Center. However, other groups have selected their own Bible study materials. Connie Beamer can help suggest courses of study, as well.
When and Where Do These Groups Meet?Small Groups meet on various days and nights of the week in homes throughout the greater Lynden area. What works best for you, and with what regularity? |
